5000 BC- Earliest evidence of settled human habitation in the Nile delta.

3000 BC- Earliest evidence of sun-worship in Egypt.

 

2630 BC- Netcherike-Djoser, pharoah who built the the "Step" pyramid.

 

2420- Pepi I and Pepi II rule - government weakens.

 

 2160 BC- Capital moves from Memphis to Herakleopolis in northern Middle Egypt.

 

1700 BC- Earliest evidence of diagnostic medicine in Egypt.

 

1560 BC- War between Thebes and Asaitic ruler.

 

1500 BC- Earliest examples of the Book of the Dead.

 

1380 BC- Building of the Temple of Luxor by Amenhotep III.

 

1279 BC- Ramses II begins building projects - including his mortuary temple The Ramesseum.

 

984 BC- Osorkon the Elder becomes the first Libyan pharaoh.

 

750 BC- Conquest of Egypt by Kush under Kashta and then Piankhy

 

699 BC- King Tirhakah moves the Egyptian capital to Memphis.

 

671 BC- Egypt is attacked by the Assyrians.

 

670 BC- Formation of new Kushite in Meroë.

 

605 BC- Nebachadnezzar II leads the Babylonians to defeat the Egyptian army.

 

540 BC- Anaximander dies and is credited for making the first map of the known world.

 

525 BC- The Persians conquer Egypt.

 

404 BC- Amyrtaios of Sais expels the Persians.

 

332 BC- Egypt is conquered by Alexander the Great.

312 BC- Ptolemy's general Seleucus finds a kingdom ranging from Syria to west India and begins the Seleucid Dynasty.

 

307 BC-  Ptolemy creates the library of Alexandria.

 

305 BC- Ptolemy I becomes pharaoh of Egypt.

 

300 BC- Ptolemy builds the Pharos of Alexandria.

 

285 BC- Ptolemy II rules and commissions the Greek translation of the Hebrew Torah.

 

198 BC- The Seleucids under Antiochus III conquer Palestine.

 

196 BC- The Rosetta Stone is carved.

 

170 BC- Aristobolus, the first Jewish Greek philosopher, presents an explanation of Mosaic scripture to Ptolemy VI Philometor

 

69 BC- Egyptian pharaoh Cleopatra is born.

 

51 BC- Cleopatra reigns, marry's Julius Caesar and gives birth to Octavian.

 

43 BC Cleopatra forms an alliance with the leader of the Caesarian party.

 

37 BC- Cleopatra marries Mark Anthony.

 

31 BC- Cleopatra and Mark Anthony are defeated by Augustus Caesar in the Battle of Actium.

 

30 BC- Cleopatra dies; Egypt is conquered by the Romans.

 

AD 42- The library of Alexandria burns and looses 40,000 of its 70,000 books.

 

AD 66- Jewish riots against Rome in Egypt.

 

AD 145- Ptolemy publishes Almagest which summarizes the geocenetric theory.

 

AD 212- Egyptians are given Roman citizenship.

 

AD 250- Diophantus of Alexandria writes the "Arithmetica", a treaty on the solution of algebraic equations and on the theory of numbers.

 

AD 300- Rise of Christianity in Egypt.

 

AD 394- The last hieroglyph is inscribed on Philae.

 

AD 395- Egypt is assigned to the eastern Roman empire.

 

AD 384- Theodosius orders the adherence to Christianity.

 

AD 642- Egypt is conquered by the Arabs.
